Support of cinema in Lebanon. “Fondation Liban Cinéma” (FLC) is a private association that supports the development of cinema industry in Lebanon and a pionneer in the history of Lebanese cinema. “Fondation Liban Cinéma” is born from the active will of professionals who wanted to place Lebanon on the international cinematographic scene. The FLC offers to be the motor of this industry. The FLC was established on the 26th of February 2003 (Notice nº 45/AD). The Board of Administration is formed of cinema professionals, financial experts and management executives, who are capable of adopting an appropriate strategy in order to achieve the objectives of the FLC. The FLC is addressed to cinema professionals as well as an audience interested by its objectives. A membership application should be submitted to the secretary of the FLC. The members are regularly informed of cinema related activities in Lebanon and internationally, and they are members of the General Assembly of the FLC. The members of “Amis de la Fondation” are personnalities who support morally and financially the management of the FLC. Objectives: The objective of the “Fondation Liban Cinéma” is to contribute to the development of the cinema industry in Lebanon, by supporting the production and promotion of films, in Lebanon as well as in the region and internationally. It aims at helping this cinema evolve from a state of individual and dispersed works into an industry, and offers to set up an appropriate mechanism allowing the emergence of an energetic and prolific cinema. Mechanism: The “Fondation Liban Cinéma” plans to: - Create a fund for the support of film production and promotion. - Contribute to the continuous training of cinema professionals. - Create an interactive website and a database, regularly updated, covering the different professions of this sector, that would become a reference address of cinema related activities in Lebanon. - Establish a national and international communication network. - Act as coordinator among the different players of this sector. The FLC thus becomes an essential connection within Lebanon and with international cinema. Perspectives: Today, Lebanon possesses advantages that allows it to become a regional center for cinema production. The environmental diversity offers a natural setting, complemented by a qualified professional artistic, technical and technological personnel, trilingual and specialized. A production and post-production up-to date equipment is available on site, as well as a qualified and competitive local labor force. All this added to an atmosphere of freedom encouraging for artistic creativity, a feature that distinguishes Lebanon in this part of the world. The “Fondation Liban Cinéma” has faith in this cinema which it supports. Partners: Given the perspectives it has, the FLC is in constant collaboration with the “Centre National du Cinéma” (CNC) of the Lebanese Ministry of Culture. The FLC is supported by the European Union. Several expert studies were conducted with the auspices of the Delegation of the European Commission in Lebanon. These studies became reference documents that would be the basis for the setting of an operative financial strategy capable of achieving the above mentioned objectives. The FLC is equally supported by the French Embassy in Lebanon, Saint Joseph’s University, and the technological pole Berytech. The FLC cooperates with several international organizations, namely the IMA (Institut du Monde Arabe) in Paris, Unifrance Films in Paris, and IEMed (Institut Européen de la Méditerranée) in Barcelona.
