About the competition
In order to promote the Digital Arabic Content (DAC) industry in the ESCWA region, the Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD) at ESCWA launched in 2007 a project entitled “Promotion of the Digital Arabic Content Industry through Incubation”. The objective of this project is to contribute to the growth of the DAC industry in Western Asia by supporting and promoting the development of DAC applications in ICT incubation facilities.
The project comprises two main tracks of implementation. For the first track (Track 1), ESCWA prepared several studies aimed at assessing the current status of the DAC industry. These included: a) A Survey of Digital Arabic Content: Web pages, Software, Applications and Needs Assessment; b) Models for Business Plan, Marketing and Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for the Digital Arabic Content Industry ; and c) Hardware & Software Incubation Requirements and Training Needs.
For Track 2, ESCWA will incubate DAC applications in various incubators that will be selected from the region. To achieve this, ESCWA will launch awareness campaigns and will partner with the selected ICT incubators to: a) highlight the importance of digital Arabic content; b) launch a competitive process that will encourage university graduates and young entrepreneurs to research and submit proposals for a variety of DAC applications; and c) assist with and subsidize the incubation for a period of one year of those proposals that will be deemed most likely to succeed by an evaluation committee - a separate committee will be assembled in each participating ESCWA member country - which will bring together DAC experts, university professors, representatives of national ICT incubators and ESCWA staff members. Submitted proposals may address a variety of subjects that are relevant to the socioeconomic development of the Arab region including: a) software for the development of DAC; b) utilizing the potential of open source software in the development of DAC applications; c) development of applications for e-government, e-learning, e-health, e-culture, media and science; and d) other innovative DAC development proposals.
Following the end of the project, i.e. the completion of Track 1 and Track 2 activities, incubators will use the models and modalities developed over the course of the project for the implementation of future DAC projects.
Competition Results:
In the framework of this competition, ten applications were received and evaluated. "Alf Mile" , submitted by Mr. Hassan Ayoub, was selected for incubation.
Short Description of the Selected Project
"Alf Mile" is an educational interactive game set in 3D virtual reality. Players will travel around a virtual Arab World learning about local customs, getting a closer look at the culture of various Arab countries, discovering large and lesser-known historical and geographical sites while meeting and interacting with other players online. The game will allow players to customize their virtual environment and will help improve their design, programming and 3D gaming skills.
